Moving to Gresham

Founded in 1851, the city now known as Gresham was originally called Powell’s Valley after Jackson and James Powell, the two brothers who founded the area. It was then changed in 1884 when the area became home to its first post office and locals decided to name the town after the city’s first postmaster, Walter Q. Gresham. The city was incorporated in 1905 with a humble number of about 360 residents.

Gresham is now home to a population of more than 110,000 people, making it the fourth-largest city in Oregon. Nearly half are married families with children due to its safe communities and quiet atmosphere. The area’s biggest growth spurts came during the 90s and early 2000s when over 55,000 people moved to the area.

Thinking about relocating to Gresham? Our crew has established itself as the top moving company in Gresham and other Portland suburbs. Trust PDX Movers to handle your transition safely, efficiently, and professionally.

As you’re looking around at local neighborhoods, you’re sure to see a variety of comfortable and quiet areas to pick from. On the west side, near the border of Portland, communities like Centennial, Hollybrook, and Pleasant Valley give residents easy access to commute into the big city. And on the south side of town, you’ll find a number of family-friendly neighborhoods like Gresham Butte, Mount Hood, and Kelly Creek.

Once you’re in town and searching for fun things to do in Gresham, you’ll find great activities like swimming, kayaking, and fishing at Sandy River Gorge in Oxbow Regional Park. Another popular attraction in town is the Gresham Japanese Garden, similar to the other gardens of the same style found in Portland. And when it’s time to eat, head over to either Nicholas Restaurant for some unique Lebanese and Mediterranean Cuisine or enjoy some classic Italian food at Boccelli’s Ristorante.

For parents with young children, a handful of local schools are part of Portland’s Centennial School District, but the city also hosts its own Gresham-Barlow District. Elementary students can attend programs at schools like Gresham Arthur Academy and East Orient Elementary, while teenage students have top-rated high schools in the area such as Sam Barlow High and Centennial High. The only secondary school in town is Mount Hood Community College, which offers both 2-year programs and Bachelor programs through their partnership with Eastern Oregon University.

Although the city is mainly residential, Gresham jobs can be found in a few business parks and retail areas around town. The largest employer is the Adventist Medical Center, a faith-based, not-for-profit hospital network with over 1,000 employees. Another large company you’ve surely heard of before with a location in the area is Boeing’s Portland office.

When it comes to local weather, you likely know most areas in the northwest U.S. are known for a fair amount of rain. Gresham is no exception with cold winters with about 56 inches of annual rainfall. But you’ll also experience comfortable summers with temps ranging between the mid-50s and low 80s.
