Where Is Oak Hills?

Oak Hills is a census-designated place and historic district within the Portland OR metropolitan area. Some people call it a neighborhood of Portland, while others refer to it as a Portland suburb or a neighborhood of Beaverton OR, a city next to Portland.

The community is west of Portland and northwest of Beaverton. Oak Hills is 9.3 miles from Portland, creating a commute of roughly 20 minutes. The neighborhood covers 1.56 square miles, and the Oak Hills zip code is 97006, though a few addresses have 97229. Oak Hills is an urbanized and well-developed area with few major geographic features. Willow Creek runs through the community, but there are no major parks or green spaces in the CDP. Oak Hills village borders Bethany OR, Five Oaks, Triple Creek, and Cedar Mill.

The community borders U.S. Route 26 (US26), which provides direct access to Portland and cities near Portland, including Beaverton. Oak Hills residents do not have access to TriMet, the main Portland public transportation system, but you can use your car for moving to Oak Hills and to get around easily.

Oak Hills History and Overview

Oak Hills was on largely undeveloped land until the 1960s, when developers arrived and started building homes. The Oak Hills subdivision opened to the public in 1965 and became immediately popular. The community has continued to expand based on the original master plan, currently having 627 single-family homes and 24 townhouse units. In 2013, Oak Hills was designated as a historic district for its unique mid-century architecture and urban layout. It is the first mid-century modern historic district in Oregon history.

Over 1,600 residents were born in Asia, with 315 being born in India, 247 being born in Iraq, and 244 being born in China. 31% of residents are under the age of 18, 10 percentage points higher than the Oregon average. Oak Hills is also one of the wealthiest communities in the state, with the median household income being over $50,000 higher than the median income in Oregon.

What’s It Like Living in Oak Hills?

Oak Hills Oregon is a master-planned community, and the developers made the community as walkable as possible. All streets are smooth and have streetlights and signs, so you always know where you’re walking to. There are very few dead ends in the neighborhood, so the community is easy to navigate on foot or with a bike. Some streets have trees that create shade, making them very walkable in the spring and summer.

The Oak Hills subdivision does not have many major attractions. It has no clubs, bars, or spots for nightlife, making it a suitable neighborhood for people looking for a quiet place to live in. Oak Hills is popular amongst families, young professionals who commute into Portland, and affluent people. 56% of households have a median income of over $100,000, and only 8% of residents live below the poverty line.

Oak Hills Restaurants

The Oak Hills neighborhood does not have any restaurants, but it is within driving distance of several great choices. Oyatsupan is a Japanese bakery that offers authentic Japanese pastries and bread, including melon pan and kare donuts. You can also get sandwiches for a quick and light lunch. Most menu items cost less than $5, making it one of the most affordable restaurants in Oak Hills.

Oak Hills Shopping

Oak Hills does not have any stores. The closest grocery store is India Sweets and Spices, which is across Interstate 26 from Oak Hills. India Sweets and Spices is an Indian grocery store with a large prepared food menu, making it a good place to get quick meals, side dishes, and fresh ingredients. The closest shopping mall is Sunset Mall, which is just east of Oak Hills and contains a Safeway, AutoZone, and other stores.

Oak Hills Things to Do

Oak Hills is a hub for must-do churches in the Portland area. The Oak Hills Church (also known as the Oak Hills Christian Reformed Church) is a Reformed church with regular Sunday services and ministries for children, teens, families, and adults. All are welcome to attend services or tour the grounds, viewing the contemporary architecture. Sunset Church is a Presbyterian church that offers traditional Sunday services as well as Christian concerts, lectures, and other special events throughout the year. The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is also located just outside of Oak Hills.

The Oak Hills Recreation Center (also known as the Oak Hills Rec Center) is the leading secular attraction in the Oak Hills neighborhood. The recreation center is a top point of interest for outdoor activities, containing tennis courts you can use for tennis, pickleball, and similar games. The rec center also contains dance studios and club meeting rooms.

The Beaverton School District is the main Oak Hills school district, serving all students living in Oak Hills. Oak Hills Elementary School is the only public school inside Oak Hills. US News ranks Oakhills Elementary School in the top 20 elementary schools in Oregon. 82% of students test at or above the proficiency level in reading, 30 percentage points higher than the state average.

Oak Hills students then attend Tumwater Middle School in Portland or Five Oaks Middle School in Portland. US News ranks Five Oaks in the top 150 middle schools in Oregon. Five Oaks employs 44 full-time teachers, 92.7% of whom have at least three years of experience.

Students in Oak Hills can attend Sunset High School or Westview High School. US News ranks Sunset High School in the top 20 high schools in the state. 93% of students graduate in four years, and 74% of students test at or above the proficiency level in science, 34 percentage points higher than the state average.

Oak Hills has a few small private schools, including Oak Hills Christian Preschool. Oak Hills Church hosts the preschool, providing three-, four-, and five-year-olds with prekindergarten and afterschool programs. Students can learn how to speak Spanish, read books, and play fun games.

Oak Hills Oregon does not contain any colleges or universities. The closest library is the Bethany Library in Portland, which contains thousands of books, DVDs, and digital resources for adults and children alike.

The Oak Hills Homeowners Association charges an annual due of $725 to maintain common areas and cover the cost of special events and programs in the community.
